I initially wanted to write a review solely about this bad boy above, the Malossi Sport 70cc. One of the best selling 70cc cylinders ever made. It is cheap, long lasting, powerful and available for pretty much every scooter model on the planet. However, during my research I stumbled over a great blog that had not only better test equipment (Dyno!) than me, but also reviewed its main competitors from Polini and Stage6. Therefore I here present the 70cc Sport Cylinder Review out there, featuring the Malossi Sport 70cc, the Polini Sport 70cc, the Stage6 Streetrace 70cc and the Stage6 Sport Pro 70cc!
Before getting into the nitty gritty let’s have a look at each of them individually:
70cc Sport Cylinder Kit Review
Stage6 Streetrace 70cc Cylinder Kit
The Stage6 Streetrace 70cc is a cast iron cylinder with 8 transfer ports (Piaggio) and a two windowed piston with two piston rings. (Don’t worry if you don’t understand all this. TuningMatters.com will have an article about the difference of one and two piston rings and more available soon.) The liquid cooled model is available at about 130€ (not sure if there is an air cooled model out there).
Stage6 Sport Pro 70cc Cylinder Kit
The Stage6 Sport Pro 70cc is an aluminium cylinder with 7 transfer ports (Piaggio) and a non windowed (very shirt piston skirt) piston with one piston ring. The liquid cooled model is available at about 150€ whereas the air cooled one set you only 120€ back.
Malossi Sport 70cc Cylinder Kit
The Malossi Sport 70cc is a cast iron cylinder with 8 transfer ports (Piaggio) and a single windowed piston with two piston rings. The liquid cooled model is available at about 150€. The air cooled version should again be about 30€ less.
Polini Sport 70cc Cylinder Kit
The last of the bunch is the Polini Sport 70cc. A cast iron cylinder with 8 transfer ports (Piaggio) and a cut out piston skirt piston with two piston rings. It is the only modular cylinder (cylinder head consists of two separate pieces) of them all which also makes it the most expensive one. At 200€ for the liquid cooled version it is most likely not your first choice but if you run an air cooled model it becomes interesting at 130€.
So what does all this mean?
Feature wise the Stage6 Streetrace and the Malossi Sport are similar. Iron cast, two piston rings and not many bells and whistles is what you want from a wallet friendly “eco” sport cylinder kit. Perfectly fine to be used with the original carburator (increase the main jet by about 5-10%) and most of the original pots (engine revenue will increase by about 1500 rpm for all of those cylinders).
Standing out of the crowd are the Polini Sport and the Stage6 Sport Pro. The Polini unfortunately stands out for a bad reason. At 200€ it is tremendously over priced, especially when you look at the poor feature set. With a target revenue of only a few thousand rpm more than the original cylinder the thermal advantages do not justify the increased cost. The air cooled version however, should stay in the race since the high cost do not apply here.
The Stage6 Sport Pro screams racing with single piston ring piston and its aluminium nikasil cylinder. At 150€ this one is basically a no brainer and definitely best value.
The nitty-gritty
As mentioned earlier I found a Dyno test of these 4 cylinders on another blog and because stealing is bad m’kay I will simply forward you from here to their blog. However, as expected the Stage6 Sport Pro outperformed all other cylinders in the test. Surprisingly the Stage6 Streetrace performs nearly equally good as his bigger brother (some might say the racing piston and aluminium nikasil is more of a marketing strategy…). The Malossi and Polini perform well too but at a much narrower rpm band which means less power at higher speeds.

Great choice! However, I would prefer the Stage6 Clutch or the Malossi Delta Clutch over the Fly clutch (Stage6 clutch is my favourite, due to its great features).
Scooter will fly like hell with these components but you should also consider flowing the engine housing, whilst you’re at it. Have a look here:

I would change the crankshaft if you want to drive it on a daily basis or for more than about 3000km. Also get some better bearings. It’s really worth it. Especially the Minarelli engines only have a 10mm gudgeon pin. Change the crankshaft to one with a 12mm gudgeon pin!

btw, the engine with your setup will have about 15 horse power. Really not a piece of cake for the stock crankshaft!

the setup looks good, except of cylinder and exhaust! The Malossi Cylinder Kit is too expensive for the power you get. Better get a Stage6 Sport Pro Mk2 Cylnder Kit, or the Stage6 Racing Mk2.
The LeoVince exhausts are the worst! Don’t get them! Get a Yasuni C16, or C21, or a Stage6 Pro, or R1200!
With these HP will be between 13 and 16 and Top Speed about 110-120! Longer transmission is required!

Hi. Just has to mention that I managed to to clock my honda x8r with a mhr replica 70cc, leovince handmade (not 70), original intake,,polini reed membrane & 17mm carb with a cheap upgrade variator and original transmission at 110 km/h?!
Runs like a dream but as I had read about leovince and tests of exhausts I bought a stage 6 pro exhaust and got quite pissed as I lost almost 30 km/h. Retuning the carb jets made not much difference exept that I gained some 3-5 km/h. Changed back to leovince and bom I went flying again :)
However the stage 6 pro pipe got mounted on my peugoet speedfight instead that has a cylinder that is almost a 1111111111100% knock off of mhr replican and it tops out at ca 100 km/h. Original transmission on the speedfigt also, 19mm carb, intake & malossi reed.
But with the leovince handmade pipe the speedfight goes like.. Naah nah, dream on man I wont go more than 80+ with this on. This has made me think, test and curse alot!

I’d go with the Stage6 StreetRace. It has a bit more power than the Malossi but is much cheaper. It’s not made in Italy, so if you prefer something Made in EU, the Malossi is the choice.
What exhaust, crankshaft, carburettor, cluch, multivar should I get?
The Stage 6 Sport Pro Replica is the perfect exhaust for your setup. A 17.5mm carburetor (Dellorto) will work well. The Stage6 clutch is great but you could also keep the stock clutch and get some harder springs. The Malossi Multivar is really good, but also a cheaper one would work, no problem!
Make sure to also get a larger intake manifold and maybe a bigger reedvalve!
Crankshaft can be kept stock if you install a longer transmission. If you keep the stock transmission, I would get a crankshaft with a 12mm gudgeon pin!

I have an almost new 2t AC zip and i want to improve on acceleration. I’m quite happy with the stock top speed but it just takes a little too long to get there. I’ve ordered an arrow chamber exhaust and am now thinking about a 70cc kit. I don’t really want to spend over 250usd. would i be better off just changing the transmission or going 70cc? Thanks heaps.
I’d recommend going with 70cc. A Sport Kit like the Stage6 Sport Pro MK2 will last for tens of thousands of kilometers, when setup properly and gives you enough hp do go up and down even the fiercest hills. With a changed transmission you will definitely loose on top speed and the increased rpm will harm the engine.

I installed the polini 70cc sport on my piaggio liberty and the top speed remains the same , all the other components are stock, i will recieve my exhaust+ clutch+roller weights+belt+ bigger airflow tomorrow.
Im a little bit confused, why the top speed didnt changed? Is it because i have to put the racing exhaust+ clutch to see any difference?

Usually you should se an increase in speed immediately as the 70cc revs higher and thus creating a higher top speed. Tho, have you derestricted you liberty engine yet?
My scoot is derestricted, i mounter the DOPPLER S3R sport exhaust , harder clutch spring engaging at around 5000rpm + a +30% contra spring, i added 10points bigger mainjet, +carbon reed valves. it has more sprint , btw the carb is a 12m dellorto

I just got this stock Aerox 50cc 2003, previous owner know nothing about whats done etc, except all parts are “stock”. It tops about 70kph so guess some stock stuff got de-restricted.
Reliability is the sole reason why leaving my beloved veteran moped for modern scooter in the first place.
I would like to accomplish these things for about €300-400 ($400-$550), in order of priority, nr 1 is first priority:
1) A reliable everyday scooter – minimal breakdowns! Increased service intervals, while still practical interval, would be ok!
2) Without dropping top speed below 70kph, I want as good acceleration as possible, power wheelie if possible.
3) Id like it to go ~80kph (maybe even 90, but beyond that would be wasted power rather put in acceleration and/or in beer)
What stuff do you recommend for a budget of about €300-400? What service-intervals do you recommend for that stuff? Budget is not fixed, if you really suggest putting in another 100 for a lot better package ie bang/buck, then I will surely consider it.

The matching exhaust is the Polini Evolution one. Thos others that perform great are the Stage6R1200 (more torque) R1400 (More rev), Yasuni C20 (also torque) C21 (more rev). The evolution exhaust are also quite peaky and loud.

I would go with the Stage6 Streetrace or Stage6 Sport Pro MK2.
Matching exhausts would be the Stage PRO or Replica, or a Yasuni C16/R.
Get a 17.5mm carb with it and maybe a longer transmission. Also get an open intake and some carbon reeds. You will also need some variomatic rollers for adjustment and some harder clutch springs!

You really only need one gear up kit unless you using high end track part like stage 6 rt 70cc or 95cc otherwise your bike won’t pull both gears secondary gear up is the easiest to fit

Hey Daniel, i have a 2015 roughhouse 50. I’ve had a mechanic install a Stage6 MK2 70cc Cyl kit, 6g rollers, and a mallosi yellow contra spring. I also have a Stage6 Pro Replica Exhaust and racing paper air filter. It performs less quality than stock (even with jetting). I’m sure i’m under carb’d. I’ve purchased a Stage6 R/T Type PWK21 Carb but the stock intake is too small. Shall i get a performance intake (NCY) or back the carb down to a 17.5mm Dellarto? Thanks much.
Rollers are too heavy man! What are th symptoms? Doesn’t rev up until you reach 30? not reving out of corners? What cylinder is it? The 70cc Sport Mk2 or Racing Mk2? The stock intake is resticted to 12mm on most models, so you will require a new intake in any case. Since you have the 21 PWK already I’d suggest to get the new intake manifold, but like I said, the carb isn’t the entire problem, tho with your setup it is suggest to ride a larger carb for improved cylinder cooling!

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I recall when the scoot was stock it had a slingshot affect when I twisted the throttle. Now with the current mods, i don’t get that. It still goes but it’s a mild acceleration from start to say 40-50mph. You think 6g rollers are too heavy? ok. I’ll go 5s(?) The cylinder i have is a Sport PRO MKII. I will have my intake tomorrow.
I just realized that I got 15×12 6g rollers when my Roughhouse requires 16×13.. I’m an idiot..
Oh, yes, you definitely need the right size. The width is less important but the diameter affects how much the variator is opening. So currently it won’t open fully and you won’t reach top speed. Still i believe 6g is too heavy. best to order one of the Stage6, Malossi, or Polini Test Rollers and find the right setup! With stock variator, I guess it’s somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 grams! Don’t go too light, or the engine will constantly overrev. if you go to heavy the acceleration out of corners will be very slow.

there’s more tuning to come. And i was wondering is a giannelli extra v2 exhaust any good for a malossi kit 80cc kit ? Oh and is the malossi 80cc kit better than the polini kit ?
I find both the Malossi and Polini kits not so great. The entry level kit I recommend to everyone is the Stage6 Sport Pro Mk2. It’s really good for the price.
Giannelli makes good exhausts usually and I guess it works ok with the Malossi cylinder kit. Just don’t expect insane performance from it, tho the cylinder will last you very long with this setup. The exhaust unfortunately will rust away ina few years, but thats the case for all the cheap exhausts (and even the expensive ones) so never mind! The rollers are too heavy tho I believe!

Daniel, so we got her all together.. Stage6 Sport Pro MK2 Cyl, Stage6 21mm PKW Carb (102 main jet), Stage 6 Pro Replica Exhaust, NCY Intake, Stock Variator with 5.5g Rollers, and a yellow Mallosi Contra Spring. Acceleration is better than stock (though would like more), and she wants to go fast (50 at 3/4 throttle). Still breaking it in. When i let off throttle from 3/4 i don’t hear that “rang-a-dang” familiar 2t sound i did at stock. Normal? Also, manual says use 98 octane or higher, really? And, i should put more oil in gas tank in addition to oil tank with pump. Thoughts? I really appreciate your time and ideas. Thanks Daniel.
Hi, yes high octane fuel is needed normally with any tuned cylinder setup (much higher compression). I don’t think you need the contra spring at the moment. Better use harder clutch springs. The rollers sound correct, but maybe you have to go a bit lighter after it’s worn in (btw alu cylinder kits don’t need much time to wear in. 100km is enough, just keep the revs and temperature low)
Sound is difficult to judge but I wouldnt be worried!

I’m reasonably new to scoot tuning myself but I’m been on the spanners over a lot of other vehicles.
I’m looking to build a drag scoot capable of 8.* sec 1/8 miles to run in a local meet. We have no scooter workshops out here or scooter racing for that matter. It’s hard to find any solid info online but I’m summising I’ll need around the 20hp mark with a well tuned transmission. Unfortunately for you I have several stupid questions. I currently have an aerox 50cc.
I’m trying my hand porting some stock 50cc cylinders. Would you recommend a responsive cylinder to mild porting such as raising and widening exhaust ports, cleaning up transfers, port matching and adding material to the crankcase to match the previous volume? I was thinking a DR performance or Top Performance Due Plus for my goals? I am obviously measuring port timings carefully to make sure I don;t go too far.
I’m thinking I will need around 15,000rpm to comfortably achieve my goal on a 70cc and if so will need a crank. Obviously there are many options, but I was looking at a Jasil Evolution for a cost effective solution.
28mm carb, probably a OKO 28mm. Would a subframe kit to mount the carb over the rear tyre contribute noticeably to horsepower?
Will I need an overrange kit to achieve my goal? On face value I think I can get away with secondary and/or primafry gears only.
I know there’s some stupid questions which are probably common knowledge in Europe but I can’t read Portrugese/German/etc and google translate is hit and miss.
Basically I’m asking, what would Jesus do?
Or maybe something like a Stage 6 R/T 70cc with the porting mods?
